Welcome 8th Grade Students and Their Parents,
Dear Eighth Grade Students and Parents:
I am so happy to get the opportunity to meet you and to introduce myself. Welcome to eighth grade at Besteiro Middle School. This will be my 14th year of teaching at this school, and I stay because I love it here, and I am very proud of our school and all the people that work and learn here! I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Linguistics from the University of Maryland in Baltimore, Maryland in 2006. I have also completed some graduate work in Reading and Literacy at UTRGV, here in Brownsville. In my personal and professional opinion, reading and writing skills are foundational for all future learning and can set us up to be lifelong learners and leaders in our both the formal school-based classroom and in the "classroom" of life.
We may be starting this school year a little differently, but we still have the same high expectations of you that we have always had at Besteiro Middle School. As you grow older and get ready to launch off to high school and beyond it is even more important for you to take responsibility for yourself. Your parents and teachers are here to support you, but, in the end, you are responsible for completing and turning in your assignments, attending class, and asking for help when you need it. All our work for the first four weeks will be posted and submitted through Google Classroom. We will also be conducting our live classes through Google Classroom using the Google Meet app. If for some reason you are unable to attend the live class, a recording of the class will be posted in our Class Stream. IMPORTANT!!!! IF YOU DO NOT ATTEND THE LIVE CLASS, YOU WILL BE MARKED ABSENT FOR THE DAY UNLESS YOU COMPLETE THE POSTED ASSIGNMENT FOR THE DAY AND SUBMIT THEM BEFORE 11:59 PM!!!! NO EXCEPTIONS. Unexcused absences could jeopardize your moving on to the next grade level and high school! Parents please help by following up at with attendance, assignments, projects, homework, correspondences, and reinforcing positive behavior.
It is my ultimate goal for each of my eighth grade students to experience success and to foster a love of reading and writing. I am so happy to work with you and your child over the course of the school year. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. Beforehand, thank you for your cooperation and partnership in your child’s education!
Sincerely. ,
Ms. Paulette Martinez
